Long Story Short, I Survived

Image
As the clock strikes midnight, another year passes. 2024 ended with moments of love, joy, and hope with my family. I can’t help but feel a wave of excitement and anxiety pass through me as 11:59 on the clock turns into midnight.  I am delighted and beyond thankful to have survived another year unharmed with my loved ones. However, I am also scared and curious as to what 2025 will give me but as Gracie Abrams once said, “Whatever happens, I’m letting it”.  I decided that I wanted to start 2025 with positivity. I want to reflect on my past actions and improve whatever needs improvement to become a better person, daughter, friend, and student, leaving whatever needs to be left behind in 2024.  2024 happens to be another memory for me to reminisce about the past joyful memories that I’ve shared with my loved ones. Looking back, I am forever grateful that my friends are still my friends despite the challenges that we all faced through the tough year.  I want to sta...

We Could Leave The Christmas Lights Up Till January

Image
December 21st was the start of the Christmas break. My relatives from Zambales and Manila came home to celebrate Christmas and New Year with us. I was beyond excited because I got to see my closest cousins again. I spent my Christmas break with them, waking up earlier than I used to usually wake up during weekends in order to hang out with them. We also went to visit the Christmas Onederland. It was beautiful, and they also gave us sweets right after taking pictures with the characters. On December 24, my cousins and I went to Xentro Mall to buy presents for everyone.  It was really fun. We got home a little late so we ate dinner and decided to give our gifts to everyone. We then took out the speaker and made Brielle, our 4-year-old little cousin sing and dance, it was very cute and funny to see her sing and dance which made us all erupt in laughter.  At Christmas, we went to Hidden Garden to eat lunch and give our gifts to our cousins. During Christmas break, Bryn, Vhou...

Time flies by really swiftly. Another 2nd quarter is done, and I have learned plenty of things in ICT. Making HTML Files in Notepad has been an enjoyable experience. The exer activities were a lot of fun to encode even though the keyboards we used were stiff. Learning the basic HTML tags and attributes was fun, especially because we were using the computers to make activities 1 up to 20 which were the simple tags to the frames that were a little complicated to understand.                  The major problem that we have encountered during this quarter of the school year was the rushed lessons, not only in ICT but in all subjects due to the continuous suspension of classes caused by the parade of typhoons that occurred. Another problem that I encountered was that my computer station did not really cooperate during the first weeks.         ...

Break your Silence and End Violence

Image
Violence is an immoral act that a person can do to any other individual. Eliciting frustrations on women is considered an illicit act. As stated by the Philippine Commission on Women, one of the country's major social issues is violence against women. 17.5% of Filipino women aged 15-49 have experienced any form of physical, sexual, and emotional violence from loved ones, according to the 2022 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority. As of 2021, there were 8,399 reported cases of physical violence, 1,791 cases of rape, and 1,505 cases of acts of lasciviousness. It is concerning that VAW continues to exist, even though the issue has been addressed. Fortunately, laws have been implemented to further lessen the rates of women experiencing violence. RA 11313 (Safe Spaces Act) in 2019 includes all forms of gender-based sexual harassment (GBSH) that are committed in public spaces,...

Elpidio Quirino: The Legacy Of A Bigueño

Image
Elpidio Quirino, the sixth Philippine president, was a visionary leader who was essential to the nation's reconstruction after World War II. Quirino was born in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, on November 16, 1890. A self-made man, he worked hard to pursue education, eventually graduating with a law degree from the University of the Philippines in 1915. His modest upbringing as the son of a jail warden influenced his character and dedication to public service.  President Elpidio Quirino made important contributions to building solid relations between Japan and the Philippines. His forbearance and statesmanship with Japanese prisoners of war (POW) established the groundwork for the remarkable bilateral relationship that exists today.  Quirino started his public service career as a legislator, where he supported social and educational reforms. But he quickly rose to national recognition thanks to his abilities and moral character. He formed important f...

Climate Change Is Very Strange

Image
In the Philippines, sudden typhoons, rising sea levels, and unpredictable weather patterns have become the new norm, indicating that climate change is a real threat. With continuous typhoons, frequent flooding, landslides, and hotter weather conditions, this indicates that climate change greatly impacts lives in a negative way. One of the main causes of the worsening impacts of climate change in the Philippines is deforestation. Communities become more vulnerable and prone to natural disasters as forests are cut down, removing natural barriers against landslides and flooding. The use of fossil fuels in everyday life such as energy consumption, and transportation with vehicles that use gas have also been one of the many contributors to climate change. Fortunately, despite these challenges, Filipinos continue to demonstrate resiliency. Local governments and community organizations have taken mitigation measures, such as replanting mangroves and providing disaster preparedness training, a...
